The Trust is saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected death of Jeanette Fitzsimons. Jeanette shared the co-leadership of the Green Party with Rod Donald for 10 years and the two worked together most harmoniously to foster their shared aspirations and complemented each other so well. At the time of Rod’s early death Jeanette stated “I will miss his political wisdom, his generosity of spirit, his good humour and his sense of fun, more than I can say.”
We honour Jeanette’s contribution to the environment and sustainability. It has helped create a culture in New Zealand that fosters community approaches to restoration and nature protection on private land. Although no longer in the public eye, Jeanette will be sadly missed, and we mourn the passing of both these giant totaras of the New Zealand environmental movement.
