Each year a South Island marae hosts the official Waitangi Day commemorations on behalf of Ngāi Tahu. This year it was the turn of Ōnuku rūnanga near Akaroa. The day began with a traditional pōwhiri, whaikōrero (speeches) and a citizenship ceremony, and the official opening of the new wharekai (dining room) for the marae.
The RDBPT Trust congratulates Ōnuku on the successful completion of its wharekai and the wonderful and well attended Waitangi day commemorations.
