While the official opening of the Rod Donald Hut is a couple of months away it is now open to tramping and youth groups who would like the opportunity to trial the hut before the public DOC booking system begins operating.
So far a few private groups have taken up this opportunity and have given positive feedback and helpful suggestions to the Trust. The hut sleeps 9 and can be accessed from the Port Levy Saddle on Western Valley Road (between Little River and Port Levy) and the walk is a fantastic first overnight tramp experience for families with young children.
The Rod Donald Hut is the midway point on the 3 day tramp the Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust is currently developing in conjunction with DOC to link the Packhorse Hut to the Hilltop.
To book the hut contact hut@roddonaldtrust.co.nz. $15 per adult per night and $7.50 for under 18s. The hut is locked and access is only available to booked groups authorized by the Trust.
