Saddle Hill/Puaitahi

In 2013 the Trust worked in partnership with the government Nature Heritage Fund and the Josef Langer Trust to secure the area of Saddle Hill/ Puaitahi as a Department of Conservation scenic reserve.  The reserve straddles the ridge between Akaroa harbour and Reynolds Valley and contains some outstanding native snow tussock vegetation as well as the popular rock climb known as Coffin rock.  A walking track has been marked from the Bossu road to the summit giving spectacular views over Akaroa Harbour, Te roto o Wairewa, Te Waihora, the ocean and the alps.   To follow the walking track, obtain our Akaroa Wairewa Summits and Bays brochure from one of the Banks Peninsula visitor centres or the DOC visitor centre at the Arts Centre in Christchurch. The track starts on Bossu Raod and is best approached from Reynolds Valley Road near Little River.
