It is always sad to say goodbye to retiring Trustees. We farewell both long standing board member Maureen McCloy, and our more recent trustee Piper Pengelly who joined us in 2024. It is a huge commitment for Trustees to come on board and undertake this volunteer role, but the mahi of our Trust would not happen without loyal people stepping up to provide governance and assistance.
Maureen joined the Trust in 2017 and has held many roles during her time with us, including Chair. Having worked as the Corporate Services Manager of YHA New Zealand and being a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors, Maureen’s governance experience has provided us with a huge amount of knowledge, guidance and leadership. She has assisted with navigating complex projects and played a pivotal role in the purchase of Te Ahu Pātiki, and the subsequent setting up of Te Ahu Pātiki Charitable Trust. Thanks so much for everything Maureen, and we know you will make the most of having more time to enjoy your great passion for the outdoors!

Piper might have been our youngest ever Trustee, but her knowledge, leadership skills and enthusiasm have proved to be valuable for the time. Having just completed her studies of law and economics at University of Canterbury, Piper now heads off to start her career in Auckland.
Piper has held strategic and leadership roles in several youth organisations including Youth Voice Canterbury and the Ministry of Youth Development, as well as involvement with the Styx Living Laboratory Trust and as a BLAKE Ambassador for Takahē. We have been very grateful for her help in assisting the Trust with its reduction of carbon emissions.
Piper is now heading off to walk Te Araroa over the summer, hence the photo of the new pack and footwear. We look forward to seeing some great photos from Piper and wish Piper all the best.
We have two wonderful new Trustees joining our team early next year, so watch this space for more details.
