Changes to Seasonal Lambing Closures on Te Ara Pātaka Walkway

Recent changes to some of the seasonal lambing closures now means that the Te Ara Pātaka track network can be walked from end to end (Gebbies Pass to Hilltop) all year round. This enables easy access between the Packhorse Hut and Rod Donald Hut, and also provides a straightforward way for both huts to be booked on consecutive nights.

Gebbies Pass to the Packhorse Hut is a great walk, and this is one section that is now open all year round, along with the popular Mt Herbert to Port Levy Saddle section.

Many thanks to the generosity of landowners who have allowed access through their private properties to enable this to occur.

Some general advice when walking through stock during the lambing season includes:

  • Remember no dogs are allowed
  • Keep your distance from ewes and lambs where possible and walk slowly. Do not pick up lambs.
  • Mountain bikers – If there are ewes and lambs in your vicinity then slow down to walking pace or dismount.
